![]() The rock gate that sits on the entrance was built in 1932 by inmate labor. In 1924, the City Council voted to put a gate at the north entrance, allowing the road to be closed during wet weather to prevent road damage as well passing an ordinance that turned the drive into a one-way road. A pavilion was built and leased out with electricity provided by the city. Improvements to the boulevard started happening in the 1920s. News of the road quickly traveled and in 1908 it was featured in a national travel magazine. However, by 1907, autos were allowed on the road once more and were given the dedicated times of Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoon, the rest of the times were allotted to horse and buggy. To ease the conflict the city council passed an ordinance banning autos from the road and imposed fines up to $50 and/or 10 days in jail.īicycles also were banned under this ordinance as a young, local man, Ayex Payne, lost control over his bike down a steep grade and crashed into a boulder suffering a fractured skull and broken nose. Traffic between horseless carriages and horses and buggies became an issue on the two-way street as hundreds of visitors flocked to the area.
